Care After Dental Implant Surgery

After the tooth is removed, the cavity left behind is filled with blood which clots and heals over. Do not disturb the blood clot as there is nothing better you can put in it's place. Do not rinse it out, or poke it out with the tongue or handkerchief, especially for the next three hours.

Rinsing

No rinsing today, but start tomorrow with Corsodyl or salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water). The next day and every day thereafter, rinse with hot salt water. This speeds up healing.

Pain

If you have any pain, taking Paracetamol should help. There should be nothing more than a dull ache present when the injection wears off. If any severe pain worries you, or you develop a nasty taste after 48 hours, do not hesitate to contact the clinic.

The pain killer given to you by ourselves is taken as one tablet per day. It CANNOT be taken together with Nurofen (Ibuprofen) or Aspirin but CAN be taken with Paracetamol if needed as increased pain control. If this is not effective enough, Codeine can also be taken at the same time to further control pain.

Bleeding

When you leave the surgery you will have stopped bleeding. If you disturb the wound it may start bleeding again. If this happens do not be alarmed, but take a clean wet handkerchief, roll it up like a sausage, place it over the wound and bite on it for fifteen minutes. If it still bleeds afterwards, contact the clinic.

Antibiotics

Amoxycillin 250mg or 500mg is taken as one tablet three times a day if prescribed. Metronidazole is taken as one tablet three times a day if prescribed.

Drinking and Smoking

Nothing very hot or cold in the mouth and nothing alcoholic 24 hours. No smoking for 24 hours.
