Comfort during treatment
Is it uncomfortable when the implants are placed?
No, not at all. The Compudent® anaesthetic machine delivers local anaesthetic almost completely painlessly and the numbness achieved is very profound. Today’s dental anaesthetics are extremely effective and no pain is felt during the procedure. The placement time for a single implant is usually less than 30 minutes and you can watch TV during this time or listen to your Ipod© if you prefer. Postoperatively, a painkiller is given immediately after the procedure, whilst the mouth is still numb. This is very effective to control any pain for the rest of the day and can be augmented with other regular painkillers if needed. The next day there may be some swelling and a little soreness but, again, regular pain relief will suffice to allow returning to work if necessary. Very large cases may need to rest for a day or two but the amount of postoperative pain experienced is always a surprise as people generally expect much discomfort which does not materialise.
If the implant surgery is going to take a long time can you have sedation or a general anaesthetic?
Sedation is very popular during implant placement and is extremely effective for nervous patients. This can be given intravenously during the treatment or in tablet form the night before and on the morning of treatment. General anaesthetic is mostly used for large bone-grafting cases performed in hospital with an overnight stay a requirement afterwards.
