Mini Dental Implants
Denture stabilisation in Surrey from Dr Andrew Murphy
The mini dental implant or MDI is used to retain and stabilise dentures and is extremely effective in this function. The MDI is much smaller than conventional implants and so requires very little bone to support it. It is also self-tapping which means that it will screw itself into the bone after a small pilot hole has been made.
No surgery is required to place the MDI, simply a little local anaesthetic and the implant goes straight through the gum and fixes into the bone. The top of the MDI has a small ball which fixes the denture into position via a keeper fitted inside the denture.
The existing denture can be modified to accommodate the keepers or a new denture can be made with the keeper already inserted.
Mini dental implants are far less expensive than regular implants and work just as well in terms of denture retention if not better because the denture can be very small without the need for a palate.
